NWT #6: Disparate But Not Serious

Post by chiscotheque »

Question: Why is an ironic sensibility always ahead of the fashion?

Card: The Page Of Fire Adam Ant

Answer: An ironic sensibility is always ahead of the fashion because it is behind. (Adam = first human; Ant[e] = before; war paint = Native American Indians; fashion = 16th Century Hussar jackets.)

To be "adamant" is to be "certain" - which is the quality irony seeks to undermine - derived from the word for a "legendary rock or mineral to which many, often contradictory, properties were attributed". How ironic that the substance used proverbially to describe indomitable hardness and fixity never actually existed. Adam Ant (aka Stuart Goddard) was not the singer's real name either.
