The Corband Tarot is today very rare: a few incomplete decks remain in private collections, while the Academy of Sciences in Turin possesses the proofs of press deposited in 1847, also these incomplete.
This particular limited edition (only 666 numbered copies) was obtained from the sheets preserved at the Academy of Sciences.
The cards are faithfully reprinted in every detail and came in a wonderful box created by italian art designer Letizia Rivetti and hand made in Italy by expert craftsmen.
Of course, the box is in 19th century style: book shaped, marbled paper, golden corners, interior in velvet.
The deck come with a booklet in english written by Giordano Berti and Philippe Noyes (18 full color pages) with historical news on the deck and its authors. It is a very interesting story of a french family migrated in Italy active in various activities, including Tarot printing.
Looking at the Corband Tarot it is immediately evident that these cards are completely out of the Piedmontese and Marseilles tradition. In fact, the source of inspiration for Jules and Fleury Corband was the "Soprafino" Tarot created in Milan around 1830 by Ferdinando Gumppenberg and Carlo Della Rocca; a model that during the nineteenth century had an extraordinary success. However, Jules, who was the engraver of the woods for the press, gave the figures an original character.
Inside the box there is even the Talisman of Tarot created by Giordano Berti: a very special object in hypoallergenic metal (40 mm diameter) which represents a symbolic synthesis of the Tarot deck.
