Rachel's DoW 31 Robots!

Post by Rachelcat »

I have been threatening you all with robots since DoW started, and now they’re here. The decks are I Tarocchi di Robot, a Lo Scarabeo Tarocchi D’Arte deck from 1987, and Robo Tarot by Peter Hague, a majors deck from Etsy. I don’t remember the year, it’s no longer on Etsy, and I can’t find him on deviantart either.

The decks are very different, but I think they’ll work well together. When I obsessively collected these, I went all out on robots. I learned that I like robot design but not robot stories. The stories are all social commentary about what makes people human, or people, and they’re usually sad stories of prejudice and misunderstanding. I just like to look at metal people!

Another deck with a robot-like theme is the LS Tarot of Metamorphosis, which has the suit “Pentacles: The Posthumous Metamorphoses,” which shows various combinations of humans and technology (some reminiscent of Perdido Street Station, in which combining people’s bodies with steam-powered machines was used as punishment.) But I don’t think I’ll use that deck this week. Maybe another week.

Robo Tarot is a majors deck that has fun, colorful designs. It’s numbered in binary and labeled in a machine-readable font. It has three Fools. The backs feature a battery with + and – marked, making it non-reversible. So many fun details!

Robo Tarot.jpg

Tarocchi de Robot is more “serious,” but with what I would consider a few humorous touches, including robotic fish and other animals. The backs look like metal doors of a space ship. The little silver booklet (in Italian) was written by Giordano Berti. It has a history of tarot section, which I’m sure is great, if I could read Italian. However, I’m going to have to disagree with Berti on the assignment of the suits. Here are my assignments:

Laser = wands, fire. Although some of the lasers are shown being used as weapons/swords, I think the energy/fire of wands works better. (Plus, I think Luci works better for swords.)

Nulla = cups, water. This is an odd suit. The pictures are simply splashes of something progressing from top of the card to bottom, Ace to 10. I’m assuming it’s water, could be oil? It’s definitely not “nothing” though. This one’s going to take some work to read!

Luci = swords, air. These are small balls of light interacting with the robots. While they’re not like swords, they are light, as in understanding.

Scarabei = coins, earth. These are actual metallic beetles, shown with other robots. Besides being kind of coin-like (although more complex), the theme seems to be creation and reproduction. The scarabs are often coming out of other robots. So that works for me as a kind of earthy, robotic life.

(Berti’s assignments are: denari = luci; coppe = scarabei; spade = laser; bastoni = nulla.)

Who knew I had so much to say about robot tarots?

Let’s move on to the interviews!

I Tarocchi di Robot

Sunday 1.jpg

Most important characteristic, Regina di Laser
The deck is beautiful and powerful, creative and starkly masculine at the same time. I’m not sure why we have to have metallic breasts, but these aren’t the only ones in the deck . . .

Strength, 3 di Scarabei
The strength of the deck is its physicality. Even though it’s obviously fantasy, it gives the impression of solidity to its fantasy.

Weakness, la Papessa
The deck doesn’t offer much in the way of spirituality. Maybe because robots aren’t spirit? The inspirational aspects have to come from the reader, not the art.

What you can teach me, 7 di Nulla
Tarot is more of an inkblot test than I usually think. Each card can mean many things, almost whatever I want. I have make my choice for suits, and they will work.

How can I learn it, 3 di Laser
By seeing it with my eyes, but also feeling it in my body. I need to allow my readings to move and change in concert with the cards and what I see at the time of reading.

Outcome of our work together, la Torre
Wow, that’s intense! Although this looks more like Atlas holding up the universe than a lightning-struck tower. I’m trying to build up a foundation of reading with this deck, but the foundation will just become a burden. I need to be more open and changing, as above.

Robo Tarot

Sunday 2.jpg

Strength, Chariot
The cards tell a story, if you can follow along. The deck is going somewhere, taking us somewhere.

Weakness, Empress
The deck is not what I’d call beautiful. But I don’t think it’s really lacking in feminine touches. We’ll see on this one.

What can I learn from you, Death
All things come to an end, even robot tarots. The deck has a subtle (or not-so subtle?) emphasis on ecological issues. (Like the Chariot flying to the start to get more energy.)

Outcome of our work together, Magician
There’s nothing we can’t do. It’s clever and fun, but also a real tarot with something to say. It has all the magician’s stuff: cards, balls, saw, wand, birds and rabbits. And top hat. It comes fully equipped for what you want to use it for!

Stay tuned for more robots! Have a great week ahead!

Monday

I feel uneasy about my lazy weekend. Did almost nothing but walk and watch tv and eat. And play a little with robots! What do I need to know and do about my weekends? How can I use them better?

Four Noble Truths/Medical Model Spread

Monday 1.jpg

Symptom (describes the issue), 2 di Nulla
I feel like I want to goof off, but then I feel guilty. I like it and I don’t like it at the same time.

Diagnosis (cause of issue), 5 di Nulla
Because negative self-talk. I too often motivate myself by berating myself. Not the way to get things done, just a way to make me feel bad, or at least uneasy.

Prognosis (outcome), il Papa
I will be following the party line soon enough. This uneasiness shows that sometimes freedom comes within structure. I’ll find my structure and then I’ll be fine.

Prescription (advice), 3 di Laser
But to do that, I have to move and change. Find or make a plan to follow, and then do it!

Monday 2.jpg

Path (ways to put advice into effect), la Guistizia, la Temperanza, la Stella
Wow, heavy hitters for advice! A powerful female trio! My plan needs to feature a balance of goofing and work. And blending them! If I enjoy my work, what’s the difference between fun and work? I also need counting my blessings. This extra time and being at home really is a blessing, and I need to take advantage of it.

I know we’re all getting tired of quarantine readings, but every day is quarantine day, and we’re still getting used to it!

I added the Robo Tarot versions of the majors to compare and contrast.

Have a happy Monday, everyone!

Tuesday
Arrowhead Spread with Robo Tarot
How will the meetings on Wednesday and Thursday go?

Tuesday.jpg

World, Moon, Fool
The meetings will be important, but there will be some confusion and missteps.

Because one of the cards is numbered 0, we have a lot of repeated cards. Also, I didn’t think about the cards being numbered in binary. But I just used regular digits for this numerological spread!

Cause, 21+0=21. World
Because the meetings are important!

Receiving, 21+18=39=12. Hanged Man
I’ll be hanging around, not really involved in the meetings, but just there. This is pretty much the grimmest but humorous cards!

Doing, 18+0=18. Moon
I’ll be confusing matters a bit. Oh, wait! I’m literally showing the PowerPoint for the meeting, so there I am showing the phases of the moon. This is a fun, clever card!

Outcome, 21+18+0=39=12. Hanged Man
They won’t get done what they wanted to get done, but it will happen eventually.

Advice, 12+12+18+21+18+0+21=102=3. Empress
Appearances are important. If things get kind of messed up, don’t show it, just make it look like everything is working smoothly, and care about how I look on the screen. Help people get their tech right without making them feel stupid for not knowing. If I care, all will be well.

Stay tuned for more robots! Happy Tuesday!

Wednesday
Why the Who is in the What

Wednesday 1.jpg

I will be trying to do my work very diligently and carefully today, but I’ll still be worried and maybe feeling guilty about something. But if I follow my intuition, all will be well.

Two (or three) robotic animals today. I like the design of the horse, it looks very no-nonsense. Is the scarab attached to the top of its head?

The dog or whatever it is looks worried and concerned about the lights swarming around its head.

This ace definitely looks more like sword than wand, light going straight through the head! But it could also be pure action, before we’re ready, only the head is there.

I think la Papessa is trying to point out anachronism. A totally automated intelligence wouldn’t usually need to look at a paper book, but maybe there are some things from the past she can’t learn online. (I also think this is a male-ish robot. It kind of looks like it has a beard. And all the other female robots are more sexualized, or at least sexually differentiated.)

Robo Tarot card of the day

Wednesday 2.jpg

Magician again. It will be a day of doing, showing, and accomplishing things for other people.

Enjoy your Wednesday!

Thursday
The perennial religion question: What do I need to know about the role of religion in my life going forward?
Let’s try Wirth’s Courtroom Spread.

Thursday.jpg

Prosecution, don’t do: 10 di Laser
Don’t let the ultimatums and ubiquity of religion overwhelm me. Is it the most important thing?

Defense: Do this: 7 di Nulla
Do whatever I want, what feels good.

Judge, combined advice: il Papa
Appropriate! Learn about it but don’t sign on to anything. I can learn for fun and learn for help with live challenges, but I don’t have to join anything to get benefits from it. Don’t believe that religion holds the key. We all hold the key to our own lives.

Sentence, outcome: Fante di Laser
Put my energy into learning. I don’t know everything. In fact, try to keep that beginner’s mind.

Summary, sum of previous cards: 10+7+5+10=32=5. Hierophant
I swear I didn’t stack the deck or the numbers! Religion is just another aspect of culture, human created if not human focused. But it should be human focused. I like this card. Robots worship the battery, their source of life and power. It holds the positive and negative!

Have a good day!

Thursday
I liked the Wirth spread so much, I’m going to use it again today.
What do I need to know about continuing to take those specific meds?

Friday.jpg

Going against me: 9 di Laser
I feel like I need to protect myself.

Going for me: 5 di Luci
The fact that I’m confused and asking the question is a good thing.

Judge, advice: 2 di Scarabei
I need to balance the risks and benefits to my health. That’s what I’m trying to do!

Sentence, outcome: 7 di Laser
(You shot my robot fish! It had to be said!) I will take action and be confident that what I’m doing is right.

Summary: 9+5+2+7=23=5. Hierophant
Again! I didn’t really like that outcome because I'm not confident, and the advice is what I’m already trying to do. But this answers the question: I’ll do whatever the doctor tells me to do. He wants me to stop taking it, but I still have dumb symptoms, so we compromised, and I’m taking it every other day to wean myself from it. Which the doctor said was ok. So I’ll check in with him again, but I think when I’m done with the supply I have, I’ll stop. Not a happy prospect, but evidently I need to think about my greater health.

Happy Friday!

Saturday, last day for robots

Did you know that 1+2+3+4+5+6=21? How about that it’s the premise for a majors-only spread? Lay out the card in a pyramid shape bottom to top and then use the Lenormand chaining technique to get a varying number of cards for your reading, always ending with the Fool. See the full instructions on Mary Greer’s blog. https://marykgreer.com/2018/08/27/the-c ... id-spread/ I hereby rename the spread “Chain of the Fool.” With a soundtrack by Aretha Franklin, of course!

Robo Tarot: What’s the outlook for next week?
Uh oh! I just figured out that for this to work, I have to use only one Fool!

Robo Tarot Fools.jpg

pyramid.jpg

Saturday.jpg

Hierophant, Strength, Sun, Fool

My week will be pretty much the same, by the book, following the party line. I will be strong, open and honest, and generally successful, climbing the ladder step by step. I may be foolish to keep trying to improve myself, but it might just work!

I’ll be back to do a final reading with I Tarocchi di Robot!

Sunday final reading with I Tarocchi di Robot

I got lazy yesterday, but I really want to use this deck again, so here we are!

I think a robot-related wisdom reading is in order. What will be our civilization’s relationship with technology going forward?
The spread is the beginning, cross part of the Celtic cross.

Sunday 1.jpg

Significator (chosen randomly), civilization: la Torre
Well, that sounds bad, but looking at the card, I see more heavy burden than catastrophe. We’ve built quite an edifice of civilization that is both a blessing and burden.

Cover, issue and atmosphere: la Forza
The issue here is that we have so much power, nuclear power and weapons, amazing communications abilities, ridiculous data collection and storage ability. How do we use all this power?

Cross, obstacle: 2 di Laser
This is really a follow-on from la Forza. All that energy and power can be an obstacle as well as an opportunity. This robot isn’t as human-like as many of the others. It has rather scary huge crab claws. The real obstacle to a positive outcome is taking action without considering the effect on humanity.

Crown, the aim or ideal: gli Amanti
It is civilization’s goal to have a beneficial, symbiotic relationship with technology. We’ll work seamlessly together to the benefit of all. These robot lovers make me uneasy. Besides being overly sexualized, they don’t seem to be really connecting, and they’re in awkward poses. Maybe the ideal of seamless benefit is just too idealistic.

Beneath, already accomplished: 9 di Scarabei
Because this is the 9, not the 10, this is capitalism, individual prosperity for some. Perhaps we’ve reached the limit of what it can do. Adam Smith’s invisible hand has done much for the development of technology, in fact, capitalism and technology have developed pretty much because of each another. There now exists in the world enough food and material goods, and yes, technology and information, for everyone in the world to have plenty. The only reason poverty still exists is because of politics and economics.

Past: 5 di Scarabei
In the past poverty was real. People were being eaten by forked-tongued necessity. And technology definitely helped change that. Poverty is still real now, but it doesn’t have to be. It can truly be a thing of the past.

Future: Regina di Laser
Here we have water of fire, not as idealistic as the Lovers, but perhaps more realistic and realizable. If we can wield all that power with some consideration of humanity and human values, as a queen of wands would, then this will be a good enough future!

On to week 32!
